Does Watching Porn Affect Your Sporting Prowess? We Discuss

Performing at the highest echelons of the sporting world requires intense focus and a strong desire to succeed. Most professional athletes treat their career as a full-time job, and training comes first. They don’t have a lot of downtime, and any spare time they do have is likely spent napping, refuelling, and watching video footage of their last performance.

This kind of lifestyle can be tough on relationships. It also makes it hard to have a satisfying sex life if you are too tired to romance your partner or too busy to hook up with a Tinder date. For some athletes, porn is an acceptable substitute for a sex life, but can it affect an athlete’s sporting prowess? Let’s find out.

The Rise of Porn

Porn consumption has increased massively since the birth of the internet. Porn is readily available, in the form of images, videos, cam girls, live stream content. Whatever your tastes, there is a porn channel out there for you. Popular channels like Babestation have sexstation chat where viewers can give instructions and lead the action. Indeed, many sports stars are known to use the channel, including (allegedly) Wayne Rooney!

Testosterone Boost

There is a strong link between sporting achievement and testosterone. Indeed, testosterone is well known as a performance enhancer, and athletes with high levels of testosterone, natural or otherwise, will be stronger and have a competitive advantage. Of course, it’s more complicated than that, but for the purposes of this article, it’s interesting to note that a scientific study found watching porn led to a spike in testosterone.

In the study, which was published in the leading scientific journal, Hormones and Behavior, researchers discovered that a group of elite weightlifters who watched porn before a gym workout saw significant improvements in their performance when doing heavy squats. This suggests that sexual activity prior to a sporting event or training session could actually help performance rather than hinder it.

Athletes abstaining from sexual activity see significant falls in testosterone, so while it may be advantageous to an athlete’s focus to spend time away from family while preparing for an event, porn can help give them a testosterone boost. This, says researchers, will re-energise them, which will enhance performance and reduce fatigue.

Another study carried out by the England Rugby team managers also found that watching erotic video clips prior to a training session helped increase testosterone and by extension, physical performance.

Reduced Stress

Competitive sports can be very stressful. Not only are you competing against the clock – and by extension, yourself – but in team sports, your performance affects other people. There are many healthy ways to deal with stress, such as CBT and counselling, but watching porn can also indirectly improve athletic performance by reducing feelings of stress.

Watching porn is typically something men and women do when they masturbate. Explicit images help the watcher achieve an orgasm, which in turn leads to a release of feel-good hormones and mood improvements.

While there is no real scientific evidence that links porn and masturbation with improved physical performance on the track, field, or in the gym, it stands to reason that a sated athlete is a more relaxed one. If an athlete is feeling more relaxed and less stressed, they are likely to perform better due to increased motivation and an improved mood.

Note that too much masturbation while watching porn can lead to negative side effects in men, such as penile soreness and sensitivity, swelling of the penis, and fatigue. This could cause problems, especially for pro cyclists who already put a lot of pressure on their undercarriage.

However, it’s not all good news. There is a fine line between an occasional porn habit and an addiction.

The Perils of Porn Addiction

While watching porn from time to time is unlikely to cause you harm, there is evidence to suggest a small minority of people become addicted to pornography and their viewing habits eventually spiral out of control.

Any athlete with a porn addiction is going to see their performance suffer. They’ll find it difficult to regulate the amount of time they spend consuming porn, and this will inevitably interfere with their training and sleep schedule.

Watching porn is something that typically takes place at night when an athlete is supposed to be sleeping. Porn channels are something of a rabbit hole in that one sexy video links to another, and in pursuit of more exciting content, it’s easy to waste several hours. In addition, the brain usually becomes desensitised to explicit content over time, so while a raunchy threesome might get your motor running in the beginning, after a while, only the really twisted, out-there content will get the job done.

If you are still unsure of whether watching porn will help you achieve a Personal Best, we suggest you experiment, but don’t overdo it!
